Hawthorn tincture
Tinctura Crataegi

International name: Hawthorn tincture.

Pharmacological group: Cardiotonic medicinal product of plant origin.
Dosage form: Tincture.
Composition (per 25 mL): Hawthorn fruits – 1.87 g; Hawthorn flowers – 0.62 g; Ethyl alcohol 70% – q.s. to obtain 25 mL of tincture.
Contains a complex of biologically active substances: triterpene compounds (oleic and ursolic acids), flavonoids (hyperoside, quercetin, rutin), tannins, caffeic and chlorogenic acids, choline, acetylcholine.
Pharmacological action: Has sedative, cardiotonic (positive inotropic effect, resulting from regulation of calcium metabolism and homeostasis in cardiomyocytes), vasodilatory and hypotensive effects. Relieves arrhythmias of neurogenic origin, regulates lipid metabolism, and increases the sensitivity of the myocardium to cardiac glycosides.
Indications: Used as an adjunct in complex therapy.
• Functional disorders of cardiac activity: tachycardia, extrasystolic arrhythmia;
• Angioneuroses;
• Neurocirculatory dystonia of cardiac and hypertensive types.
Side effects: In some cases, allergic reactions, rash and pruritus may develop.
Prolonged use at high doses may result in bradycardia and arterial hypotension.
Method of administration and dosage: Administered orally at a dose of 20–30 drops 3 times daily before meals (the drops should be diluted in 1/4 glass of water). The duration of treatment is determined individually by the physician.
Missed dose: A double dose must not be taken if a dose is missed. The next dose should be taken as soon as possible or according to the original dosing schedule.
Use in paediatrics: Not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age.
Contraindications:
• Hypersensitivity to any of the components of the medicinal product;
• Pregnancy and lactation;
• Children under 12 years of age.
Pregnancy and lactation: The medicinal product may be used during pregnancy and lactation as prescribed by a physician.
Effects on the ability to drive and operate machinery: The medicinal product does not affect the ability to drive vehicles or operate machinery.
Interaction with other medicinal products: The medicinal product may enhance the effects of cardiac glycosides and antiarrhythmic medicinal products.

Special precautions: During treatment, monitoring of blood pressure and electrocardiogram (ECG) is recommended.
Overdose: Symptoms: Dizziness, tremor, drowsiness, decreased blood pressure.
Treatment: Discontinuation of the medicinal product.
Precautions: The medicinal product should be administered with caution in patients with liver disease, alcoholism or diseases of the brain, and in children under 12 years of age.
Presentation: 25 mL in orange polymer bottles equipped with a dropper and screw cap.
Shelf life: 3 years.
The medicinal product must not be used after the expiry date or if any defects are detected during visual inspection.
Storage conditions: Store at room temperature, protected from light.
Dispensing conditions: Pharmaceutical Product Group III – may be used without a physician’s prescription.
